Organic beef vs commercial beef

Today, I would like to share with everyone the difference between organic grass fed beef and commercially grain fed beef. I had posted before a short post about organic grass fed beef, but in this post, I will make a comparison between both beef products sold in the market. After reading this post, to all the beef lovers out there, you might change your mind of how you would want to consume beef in future.

If you love to eat beef, but have recently had concerns about its levels of saturated fat and cholesterol, then you'll be thrilled with what you're about to discover. Cattle were not designed to eat grains. And because of that, their diet of grains in factory farms largely contributes to the negative aspects of eating beef.

The fat content of beef is the primary reason it has lost ground as a respectable entrĂ©e on most nations' dinner table. Not only do most beef cuts have a high fat content, ranging from 35-75%, but the majority of it is saturated. Grain fed beef can also have over 50% of the total fat as the far less healthy saturated fat.

Grass fed beef usually has less than 10% of its fat as saturated. If you are a pregnant or breastfeeding mom, the extra omega 3 from the grass fed beef will provide incredible nutritional benefits for your child. For instance, a 6 ounce steak from a grass fed beef can have 100 fewer calories than the same steak from a grain fed beef.

Here's another thing about grass fed beef. CLA is a naturally occurring fat found in animal and dairy fats such as beef and poultry that are not fed grains. As soon as you start to feed cattle grain, they start to lose their ability to produce CLA. Animals that graze on pasture have from 300 to 400% more CLA than animals fattened on grain in a feedlot.

If any of you have heard of E.Coli bug, it is time to educate yourself that grain feeding cattle promotes the growth of dangerous E.coli that is more likely to pass through your stomach and infect your colon. When cattle are fed grass, the amount of dangerous E.coli decreases dramatically. If any of you have watched FOOD INC and Fast Food Nation documentaries, you will know briefly about this nasty bug. In addition to that, the risk of infecting mad cow and foot and mouth disease are higher in grain fed commercial beef then organically raised grass fed beef.

Meanwhile, below are some of the facts about organically raised grass fed beef:

  • Two to four times richer in heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Higher in unsaturated fats and lower in saturated fats.
  • Three to five times higher in CLA content.
  • Loaded with over 400% more of vitamin A and E.

Finally, before I sign off, I would like to remind every beef lover out there, to buy and only eat organic grass fed beef. At least reduce as much as possible, the consumption of commercial beef sold in restaurants, supermarkets and other available food outlets which sell this meat product. Why? I think you know the answer and reason for avoiding commercial grain fed beef. Pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics and non natural grain based diet. You are basically eating meat from sick cows. You can't get any health from a sick animal. Make sense?
