Poison Kiss : Lead in Lipstick

Ladies, this post is particularly for you. I know most of you don't really care if the cosmetic products could harm your skin or body, as long as you look pretty. Agree? Well, unless you are not afraid of developing life threatening disease such as breast cancer or even changes in 'cup' size, then you might want to be a bit more serious about choosing your cosmetics products.

I have wrote about the harmful ingredients in cosmetics and skin care products in earlier post. This would be an addition to the previous post, which I would want to highlight on lead content in lipstick. I'm sure lipstick is a 'priority' cosmetic product for you ladies out there. When you go out, shopping, meeting people, clubbing, dining and even at work, putting on lipstick is considered a regular daily routine. Of course there are some women who is not a big fan of applying lipstick on her lips. But, majority of the female adults use lipstick on regular basis.

Now, majority of lipsticks have lead content. Does anyone knows what is lead? Yes? Good then. You put it directly on your lips. And yes, you ingest it when you wear it. The average women ingests 10 pounds of lipstick in a lifetime. Surprise? But it can contain as much lead as the manufacturers see fit, and it doesn’t have to say so on the label.

Do you want to know something shocking? The FDA, doesn't even set a lead limit for cosmetics, including lipstick! What exactly is the point of having a 'Food and Drug Administration', if they are not going to make sure that toxic substances are kept out of the products you put on your lips or slather all over your body? This is insane!

And when it comes to toxins, lead is certainly at the top of the list. Studies have found that there is no safe level of lead, and since it does not break down in your body you will accumulate it for a lifetime. Lead is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems. Lead is also linked to infertility and miscarriage. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to exposure because lead easily crosses the placenta and enters the fetal brain, where it interferes with normal development.

Lead in your lipstick may come from one of two places, colorants, which may contain lead, or as byproducts from ingredients obtained from raw materials like petrolatum, mineral oil and paraffin. Women who apply lipstick several times a day could easily be ingesting high amounts of lead over the course of their lifetime, along with any number of other unknown chemical additives. In fact, women who use make-up on a daily basis can absorb almost 5 pounds of chemicals into their bodies each year!

Now, let's talk abit about breast size changes. There are a number of reasons for the increase, including obesity and environmental factors. One possible cause is the increased presence of xeno-estrogens, chemicals which mimic the effect of estrogen and are fat-soluble, which means they store themselves in your body. Xeno-estrogens are found in many places, including cosmetics such as lipstick.

The female breast contains cells called estrogen receptors which are stimulated by the presence of estrogen  into producing more mammary tissue. It is possible that stimulating these cells artificially after menopause, when natural estrogen levels drop, could contribute to breast cancer. Do I get your attention now ladies? Maybe not.

What kinds of chemicals are in your personal care products? Well, I've listed some of the harmful ingredients in cosmetics/skin care products in previous post, but I hereby provide you once again, a list to watch out for when you purchase your cosmetics or skin care products.

  • Paraben - a chemical found in underarm deodorants and other cosmetics that has been shown to mimic the action of the female hormone estrogen, which can drive the growth of human breast tumors.
  • Phthalates - plasticizing ingredients which have been linked to birth defects in the reproductive system of boys and lower sperm count in adult men.
  • Mercury - used in mascara, gels, and even eye drops, this metal can damage your brain function. Look for it listed as “thimerosal.”
  • Musks - used as fragrances, can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to skin irritation, hormone disruption, and cancer in laboratory studies.
  • Artificial fragrances - which are among the top five known allergens, and can cause asthma and trigger asthma attacks. Fragrances can also contain neurotoxins and cause hormone disruption.
  • Petroleum byproducts - used in makeup, shampoo (even baby shampoo), face creams and more, these chemicals have been linked to cancer.
  • Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) - a chemical used in shampoo to prevent bacteria from developing, which may have detrimental effects on your nervous system.

Your cosmetics should be just as pure as the food you eat because ultimately they both end up in the same place, your body. Look for products that actually list their ingredients, and then accept only those with items you recognize. One great resource to check your skin care or cosmetic products would be the Environmental Working Group's database. Alternatively, there are range of organic skin care products available in most of the organic outlets as well as selected supermarkets.
